Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers)

How does coaching work?

We begin with the belief that you are resourceful, creative and whole. The strengths and values you have will help you reach your desired outcomes. We help you learn of those qualities and teach you how to connect with them to achieve your goals and dreams.

How are sessions arranged?

Time is at a premium for most of us. Our coaching sessions are by telephone, usually at the same time each week. We have found that once a week works best. Because we are busy professionals, we ask that all clients honor the appointment once it is made. A minimum of a three month commitment is helpful for goal setting and working towards those goals. So, plan on about 45 minutes to an hour each week, at a mutually convenient time, each week for about 3 months.

What is the difference between coaching, consulting and therapy?

In coaching, you are the expert, you are in charge. You set the agenda. We work on the goals you set and with the strengths that you bring to the sessions. We help you find the way to best achieve your desired outcomes.

In consulting, the consultant is the expert. The consultant is in charge and is there to advise you what to do in a particular situation.

In therapy, a health care professional is in charge. The primary focus is to diagnose and treat mental disorders. The health care professional works to alleviate symptoms and understand the personality issues that create symptoms and or dysfunctionality.

How does positive psychology/authentic happiness factor into coaching?

Some things make us happy. Your happiness may be a job well done and someone else’s may be a charitable contribution. What makes us happy is a fundamental strength. Martin Seligman, Ph.D. is a leading pioneer in positive psychology and authentic happiness. The University of Pennsylvania has a website at www.authentichapppiness.sas.upenn.edu. At the start of our coaching relationship, you will be asked to take the VIA Survey of Character Strengths located at that web address. Go ahead - take it now! You will learn something about yourself! We will help you learn to use those strengths in identifying your goals and the choices you make.

What are the elements of goal setting?

Next Step Coaching will help you set goals that are SMART

  • S = specific

  • A = attainable
  • R = realistic
  • T = timely

goals that will work for you!
